Since its inception in 2012, the South Australian Brewing Club (SABC) has swiftly grown to become the largest and most successful brewing club in Adelaide and the country. The club embodies a diverse membership of individuals with a broad range of brewing expertise, all coming together to share knowledge and enhance their homebrewing skills. Central to the club’s calenda is the popular monthly meeting on the third Wednesday of each month, regularly attended by over 30 participants, thanks to the generous support of The Wheatsheaf Hotel. For the September monthly meeting, we have Brendan, Nick and Lachlan talking all things tech in brewing.
They will demonstrate several hardware and software solutions that can make the home brewing process just that little bit easier and help you keep track of your fermentation even when you’re away.
There will be digital hydrometers, internet-connected fermentation fridges, Pi’s, Plaato’s, cloud APIs, smartphone keg management tools and online tap lists and even a guest appearance by Alexa.
The Champion Brewer title for 2021 went to SABC member Brendan Macey!
He not only took home the perpetual Mike Leupold trophy but also a huge prize pack thanks to our friends at BeerCo.com
Best Beer of Show went to Allan Rowland, who has won the opportunity to collaborate on a brew with the guys at Western Ridge Brewing Collective.

Howdy. It’s been a big beer week for us. SABSOSA had over 380 entries and thanks to the team who collected them all up from drop off venues and at the Irish Club on Saturday. Judging is this weekend. After that, we’ll be getting on to the ‘supermarket challenge beers’ tasting. They’re had an extra month to condition and by all accounts they’re drinkable.
Other than that, we’ve got nothing else.

It’s the third Wednesday of the month and that means it’s meeting week. This month we’re at Pirate Life in Port Adelaide where we will again be their guests and that often means treats and special offers.
The subject is no and low alcohol beers. PL has released their Point Nine, a 0.9% beer, and there are now many 0.0% abv beers on the shelves and they are getting better and better. How does Pirate Life brew them?
Julien has also brewed one for us to assess.
‘Brewer’s shout’ happy hour is from 6pm- 7pm.

Our next big club event is our Real Ale Festival this coming Saturday night. It’s free for members and $10 for invited guests – members have to buy their tickets.

The club monthly meeting is this Wednesday at the Wheaty. If you’ve just joined the club, jump in. There are always new members at our meetings. We meet from 7pm in the back area of the pub.
It’s a Q&A session. Bring along your most burning homebrewing question and get an answer from the member brains trust. It can be anonymous so you can get an answer without feeling like it’s below us.
On the night you’ll be able to ask a question online or post it now.
We’ll be having a proper crack at tasting the Flanders Red Ale brewing by the club and barrel-aged.
Supermarket Challenge
We announced on Facebook that we’re doing a fun ‘supermarket will it brew challenge’. Get a team together or join one on Wednesday and help brew a beer using the ingredients in the mystery bag.
We’ll give each team some credit to buy regular beer ingredients too. Your creations will be tasted in July, so there’s two months to brew and condition.

Our regular monthly meeting is in this week at The Wheaty from 7pm.
Gary Waters will be covering aspects of the BJCP qualification including Guidelines of how to categorise your beer, how to improve your beer and judge other brewers beers appropriately.
If you want to become BJCP accredited by joining the next intake, improve your judging or even learn how judging can make you a better brewer, this meeting is for you.

We’re pleased to announce the inaugural SABC Real Ale Fest! It will be on Satuday, June 5. This means the BeerBQ event in the calendar is being replaced with this new event idea.
The theme for this event will be classic British beer styles that have been cask-conditioned and served using traditional methods such as hand-pumps or gravity fed.
Real ale is a tricky beer to have available at home given the unusual equipment, methods and fast staling due to oxygen intake. An event like this is an excellent opportunity for the club to get together and enjoy the cask ale experience.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Events like this can’t happen without member support. We need five members to put there hand up and brew a batch specifically for this event.
The club will cover the cost of the ingredients and we’ll work with you to ensure a diverse range of styles. We can help arrange kegging equipment if you don’t have any.

It’s time to ready your kegs and cubes as our barrel project beer is ready to take home. The filling day will be Saturday 17th April from 10am to 12pm at Gavin Pennell’s home where the barrel has been housed.

SABC Winter Competition

It will focus on all things Lager. No other beer styles are being judged.
The winning beer, along with coveted “brewer of the year” points, will also get a special limited edition version of their winning beer released exclusively on tap at The Suburban Brew later in the year.
Of course, the winning brewer will be invited to help brew their beer at Suburban.
Dates:
3 – 10 July – Bottle drop off (strictly) at The Suburban Brew.
14 July – Judging. closed event with accredited judges only.
Wednesday 21 July – Winners announced and prizes, at the club meeting being held at The Suburban Brew.
We’ve made a few tweaks to our 2021 calendar. The winter competition bottle drop now has a window of 3-10 July. Judging is on 14 July and the winners annoucned at the meeting on 21 July.
We are also unsure if there will be a National Homebrew Conference in October 2021.
