SABC Winter Competition open

Hello. The entry portal for the club’s winter competition is open for entries today, Monday 28 June.

The competition is only open to current financial members of SABC (join or renew here). Read more rules and conditions on the portal. Entries may be disqualified if not in accordance

You must create a new account for this competition — even if you have entered our summer and winter or SABCSOA comps before. We start a new database for each competition. You only need to register your information once. You will be able to return to the portal enter more beers or edit entries.

Pay your entry fees online. After payment, you can print your bottle labels to fix to your entries. Do not put any other marking or your name on the bottle. We just need a clear barcode to scan.

Seriously, no names or bottle markings.

The focus is lager. No other beer styles are being judged. Two entries per category will be permitted. See listed categories below.

The winning lager, along with coveted club “brewer of the year” points, will have a special limited edition version of their winning brewed to be on tap at The Suburban Brew later in the year.

Of course, the winning brewer will be invited to help brew their beer at Suburban.

Dates:

3 – 10 July – Bottle drop off (strictly) at The Suburban Brew, Goodwood Rd, Goodwood during their open hours. Check here.

14 July – Judging. A closed event with accredited judges only.

Wednesday 21 July – Winners announced and prizes, at the club meeting being held at The Wheatsheaf Hotel.

All members are notified the AGM of the South Australian Brewing Club will be held on Wednesday, 21st July 2021 at 7:00 pm at the Wheatsheaf Hotel, George St, Thebarton.

0.9 and falling…

Everyone had an excellent time at our Real Ale Festival. Thank you brewers who created something for us to enjoy at the Hilton RSL.

It’s the third Wednesday of the month and that means it’s meeting week. This month we’re at Pirate Life in Port Adelaide where we will again be their guests and that often means treats and special offers.

The subject is no and low alcohol beers. PL has released their Point Nine, a 0.9% beer, and there are now many 0.0% abv beers on the shelves and they are getting better and better. How does Pirate Life brew them? 

Julien has also brewed one for us to assess.

‘Brewer’s shout’ happy hour is from 6pm- 7pm.

SABC Real Ale Fest this Saturday, June 5

Our next big club event is our Real Ale Festival this coming Saturday night. It’s free for members and $10 for invited guests – members have to buy their tickets.  

Please book now. Partners who are non-drinking designated drivers are OK without a ticket.

Our members have brewed a range of British ales for us to enjoy. BYO food – Uber eats, share a pizza, bring a picnic to eat for yourself. 

The venue is the Hilton RSL – 147 Sir Donald Bradman Dr, Hilton SA 5033.

It’s a great little venue with a very ‘pub’ feel to it. Bring your darts and coins for cheap pool. Their bar will be open for wine or other beer.

Brewing Q&A this Wednesday and tix available for Real Ale Fest

The club monthly meeting is this Wednesday at the Wheaty. If you’ve just joined the club, jump in. There are always new members at our meetings. We meet from 7pm in the back area of the pub. 

It’s a Q&A session. Bring along your most burning homebrewing question and get an answer from the member brains trust. It can be anonymous so you can get an answer without feeling like it’s below us. 

On the night you’ll be able to ask a question online or post it now.

Tasting

We’ll be having a proper crack at tasting the Flanders Red Ale brewing by the club and barrel-aged.

Supermarket Challenge

We announced on Facebook that we’re doing a fun ‘supermarket will it brew challenge’. Get a team together or join one on Wednesday and help brew a beer using the ingredients in the mystery bag. 

We’ll give each team some credit to buy regular beer ingredients too. Your creations will be tasted in July, so there’s two months to brew and condition.

Meeting this week, beer judging explained

Our regular monthly meeting is in this week at The Wheaty from 7pm.

Gary Waters will be covering aspects of the BJCP qualification including
Guidelines of how to categorise your beer, how to improve your beer and judge other brewers beers appropriately.

If you want to become BJCP accredited by joining the next intake, improve your judging or even learn how judging can make you a better brewer, this meeting is for you.

Please email the club at info@sabrew.com if you can bring a beer to the next meeting.

And, as always (if you haven’t drank it all over the holiday period!) Bottle Bingo is back on – bring a bottle, take a bottle!

The Barrel Project is now ready for collection

ATTENTION BARREL PROJECT BREWERS

It’s time to ready your kegs and cubes as our barrel project beer is ready to take home.
The filling day will be Saturday 17th April from 10am to 12pm at Gavin Pennell’s home where the barrel has been housed.

Please bring a keg or cube to fill. We will not be bottle filling at the venue.

No formal meeting this week, beers at Sparkke

Thanks to all the members and families who came to our BeerBQ yesterday at the Prospect Petanque Club. We had perfect weather for excellent members’ home brew beers, slow cooked pulled pork in crusty rolls with homemade slaw and some Petanque to work it off. 

If you missed out, make sure you put the evening of May 1 in your diary for BeerBQ2. That’s only six weeks away, best get Brewing. (TBC). 

As we had a get together yesterday, this week’s scheduled monthly club meeting at the Wheaty won’t be on. Also because it is a Fringe venue. 
Instead we are catching up for casual beers at Sparkke on Whitmore Square, City. You’d remember their brewer Carla who was a member of the brewers panel at Suburban Brew at our January meeting. 

We’ve never been to their brewery/ bar so it’s a great opportunity to check it out. 

Meet there from 7pm.

BeerBQ this Sunday

We’re excited for our first club BeerBQ for fifteen months this Sunday, March 14 from 1 pm – 5 pm at the Prospect Petanque Club, 14 – 32 Buchanan Street, Nailsworth. The weather is looking cool but fine.

We need RSVPs in ASAP so we can plan for numbers. Register here.

This is one of the two club events for financial members of the club (renew here now if you’re not). It’s also our one for families, partners and kids.

If you’re new to the club, it’s a simple concept. We put on the food and you bring your beer in kegs with serving equipment or in bottles.

It’s a great opportunity to meet other brewers and try lots of homebrew.

We’ll be setting up a two beer serving system bar and rotating through a couple of beers at a time. Brewers pour their own beers.

You don’t need to bring any serving taps or gas. We’re supplying it all. As long as you’re using corny keg/ ball lock connectors. If you’re got something different, let us know. Bottles are fine.

For food we’re serving a simple pulled pork and coleslaw roll to keep COVID safe. If you’re kids are picky, bring something along to keep their sugar levels up.

There’s wine and soft drinks available at the bar and the club accepts card and cash. No BYO wine, only beer. Our ‘full winter version’ BeerBQ to invite your mates to is on Saturday, May 1.

You and the kids can also have a go at Petanque with instructions from the club members. They love showing it off so have a go.

Hazy shade of summer comp this week

The competition entry portal is open for our summer comp and we’re judging at our meeting on Wednesday night where’s it’s on like Donkey Kong.

Here’s a quick list of the key points;

  • Entries close at 6pm sharp Tuesday. Get them in, get them paid online and get the labels printed. You need to register a new account.
  • We’re at the Wheaty from 6pm all entries in by 7pm, judging starts around 7.30 when it’s all sorted.
  • There are no drop off locations.
  • Prizes are for financial club members only (so make sure your membership is up to date) and for the BJCP category of low abv beers.
  • Vouchers are $100, $30, $20 and points towards brewer of the year.
  • Hazy beers are a ‘loose’ category and ‘we’re not in it for sheep stations’. Again, club members only and $50, $30, $20.
  • Everyone who comes is expected to join in judging or stewarding. You’ll be grouped to tables with experienced judges. Great experience and fun.
  • Yes, we need help. Thanks for offering.
  • Pay before portal closes and print your bottle labels. Do not put your name on them! We really don’t need it. Trust us.
  • The competition rules are on our website.

Club BeerBQ, Sunday, March 14

It’s not an open invite for anyone and not for your mate who likes beer. We’ll offer that in winter on Saturday, May 1 for BeerBQ ‘full winter version’ on our regular scheduled date too.
