Scaling up

At the club meeting on Wednesday, we’re going to be joined by three brewers who took their homebrew developed recipes to commercial release. James from Shapeshifter, Tony from The Suburban Brew and many of you will know our member Stuart Kirk, SK Beverages. All three have released beers on the market this year.

We’re going to discover what lessons they learnt when scaling up their homebrew to commercial scale. Can you just press the scale-up button on BeerSmith and know the beer will be the same and how does the cost of ingredients factor. An IPA with five hops might be spectacular as a 20L batch but it’s not economically practical at 1000L.

So the theme is about recipe design and ingredients and not so much about barcodes, marketing and tax but the brewers will be available for a chat after the formalities. We’ll also have some goodies to raffle!

Win a 75L Stainless kettle

We’re going to draw the winner of the stainless 75L kettle at the meeting as well. Everyone who is currently a financial member of the club will be in the draw. If your membership has lapsed, or you’re not sure what status it is, check or renew online before you miss the draw. Tips on how to do it here.

SABSOSA entry assessment. Brewed an IPA but the hops haven’t quite popped? Maybe it’s a winning American Pale Ale. A stout but with some adjuncts? Possibly it’s better suited to the experimental category.

As we’re on the eve of the state competition, we are also asking everyone to bring along a bottle of your entry and our experienced club judges can offer some advice on if you’re entering it in the right category. It seems straightforward but many great beers lose points and places because they’re simply in the wrong category.

SABSOSA
It’s getting close. Bottle sorting is on August 31 and judging on September 6-7. If you are willing to help, either judge or steward, can you please express your interest via the portal. You need to EDIT your profile and indicate in the fields that you can help. It helps us plan things much more easily and with over 400 entries, we need to be methodical. You can also help at bottle sort and even at the award presentation on Sept 14 at the Wheaty.

The entry portal is open and closes on Aug 30. Like our comps, you should enter, pay and print labels well in advance of the deadline. You won’t be able to get in after that. Fix your labels to bottles with rubber bands.

Bottle drop off. Club members who have bottles ready can bring them to the Wednesday meeting. We’ll look after them. Goodwood Cellars are now a drop-off point too. Follow SABSOSA on Facebook for updates.

Understanding beer
Speaking of the language of beer, TAFE SA is offering its Beer Flavour Training course again. Over four weeks, it aims to teach anyone seeking a detailed and comprehensive understanding of beer styles, flavours, faults and evaluation. The course is delivered by Stephen Nelsen.

Ideas Do you have an idea for something the club can do or offer? It could be a simple meeting theme or a weekend event or even a service for members to benefit from. Let us know either by email or chat to a committee member.

Hot hot hot cold winter comp this Saturday

We need your help

This year’s winter competition is set to be hot hot hot on a cold cold cold day. Judging is happening this Saturday, July 6 from 12-3 at the Irish Club, 13 Carrington St.

Thanks to everyone who has said they can judge or steward. We always welcome more help, even if it’s just to steward for an hour or so or clean up at the end. We’re going to run this as a SABSOSA dress rehearsal and give experience to new participants.

At the time of writing, there are 55 entries and we’re expecting this to be our biggest competition yet.

Please enter, pay and print your labels before the portal closes on Thursday night. After that, you won’t be able to access your entries. We can’t accept bottles without competition labels. Bottle drop off at BeerBelly, on the day by 1215pm (strictly) or by arrangement.

We’re also doing the prize announcements at the end of judging. Come down for a beer for that. We’re also hoping to broadcast it as a Facebook live event for those who can’t make it.

The prizes for SABC members who win are engraved prize glasses for winners, medals for silver and bronze and Best of Show will receive $100 in cold hard cash (more likely a Visa gift card). Runner up wins $50.

Also this month:
July 12-14: Beer n BBQ Festival member’s casual catch-up. All days if you shout out you’re going but Sunday afternoon is likely to be the main day.

July 17: Monthly meeting. SABC AGM and beer and cheese pairing night.

Membership renewals can be done online. Make sure your membership is up to date to vote or join the club committee.

May meeting this week and more events

This week’s club meeting is on Wednesday at the brand spanking new Pirate Life Brewery in Port Adelaide. It’s an awesome investment for beer, brewing and the industry right here in little ol’ Adelaide.

The gang at PL will be conducting a tour for us as well, but numbers are limited to 40 (two groups of 20). Please ensure that you arrive early to sign up for the tours to so you don’t miss out. Facebook event RSVP.

The tour is open for club financial members (join or renew here). There is a small cost of $15 for the tour but this includes a beer. The club will also buy a few jugs of beer so we can also sample some other beers you might not want to buy a pint of.

Casual meet up
We’ve not held one this year but our first casual meet-up for a beer and a burger will be on Sunday afternoon, June 9, at the new Sparkke Change brewpub on Whitmore Square. Put it in your diaries and stay tuned for more soon.

Winter competition
Judging for SABC’s winter comp with the theme of All Things American will be on Saturday, July 6. Entries open on Saturday, June 1 and bottle drop off will be available at some of the usual venues or at the Irish Club in the CBD on the day. More on our competitions page.

Judging and SABSOSA ‘training’ session
SABC will be hosting a series of judge and steward information sessions leading up to the judging weekend for SABSOSA on September 7 – 8. We hope judges with experience and anyone interested in learning will be available to judge SABSOSA on that weekend. If you’ve judged before, check your email for more information.

These sessions will be somewhat formal but will also have a fun and social element to them. For some, it will be going over a well-trodden path but we need your experience to help hone the skills of others to build the quality of judging for our competition and in turn, produce better beer to take to the national competition. We will endeavour to cover as many facets of judging as possible without making these afternoons a chore.

The first session and SABSOSA 2019 launch is this Saturday, 25th May from 2 pm – 3.30 pm at the West Thebby. Lots of beers to taste to train your palette and we’re asking for a small contribution of $10.

New judges and interested helpers, please email info@sabsosa.com.au or talk to Gary Waters.

Hoppy Easter. Meeting this week, Pirate Life, comps and BeerBQ

Happy Easter — made even hoppier because we have our meeting this Wednesday night at The Wheaty. Our main subject is: All you need to know about kegging your beer with Lachlan. If you ever wanted to get into kegging and wasn’t sure what was involved, tonight is the night to bring all your questions or if you only keg, help share some of your experience.

Don’t forget bottle bingo — bring a bottle and leave with someone else’s beer.

Also this week, Tagocha is the food truck on site and are really keen for us to try their food and have prepared a special menu for us of what they think we’ll like. See their menu or on the Facebook event. Please support this local food truck and come by a bit earlier to grab some dinner before the meeting. You’re welcome to pre-order too via 0474163111 and tell them you’re SABC.

SABC BeerBQ
May 4 is the date, Reade Park Bowling Club (Colonel Light Gardens) is the venue. Food and homebrew are what happens. We’ll be opening up the ticketing to members soon (it’s free!). Friends and non-members will be $30 and available to be bought only via members at a date after that. Stay tuned.

Collab brew day success
A couple of weekends ago, twenty or so members met at Glen and Jo’s house for a collaborative brew day. Awesome wood fire pizzas were eaten and some beers enjoyed. The beers that were brewed will be ready for our BeerBQ on May 4. We’ll be doing it again on a Sunday sometime.

On Friday we mow the lawn because on Saturday we brew

This is a final reminder of our club brew day this Saturday, April 6. If you want to join in, either bringing your own gear or just joining in with another team, please let us know now. Either comment on the Facebook post or send us an email and we’ll invite you to the private event or send an email the details of the location (that we’re withholding for privacy).

Even if you can only drop in, don’t miss out.

There will a number of breweries in action along with a wood fire pizza oven. The club is putting on the pizzas and buying a batch of ingredients for everyone to brew but bring along any hops, leftovers or special ingredients to make a beer to, ideally, have ready to drink at the club’s BeerBQ on May 4. So low risk, easy drinking max community enjoyment and knowledge sharing.

Future happenings.

The next club meeting is on March 20 at the Wheaty where the focus of the night will be on understanding water for brewing. How to read your SA Water reports and what to add if you want to brew certain styles of beer. Definitely, a one not to miss if you want to find some micro-gains in your beers.

On Saturday, April 6 we’re putting on a club brew day and seeking ideas on what you’d like to happen — team brewing, mini comp, pick different styles and learn by assisting others etc. A BBQ is an option too. Check out Lachlan’s post in the Facebook group and leave a comment or send us an email.

Whatever happens, block out your diaries and come along. Hopefully, we can have 6-8 systems brewing and the results could be conditioned in time for May 4th, our annual BeerBQ.

Don’t forget, you can renew your SABC membership online at any time to be eligible for our events.

Success for SA at Aust. National Homebrewing Championships

SABC members at ANHC Club Night 2018Congratulations to all our members who placed at the Australian National Homebrew Championships judged late last week in parallel with the Australian National Homebrew Conference.

Overall SA placed third in the state rankings with 11 winning beers (not all SABC members) — which is an excellent result showing we punch well above our weight compared to the numbers from the bigger states (that have more than one club).

SABC members Greg Weider (three silver) and Kieren Vercoe (two gold, seven places) were both placed second as best brewer but it was Greg who took it out on a countback. The full results are here.

Along with great wins by Greg and Kieren, other club members with places were: Clinton Fisher (x2), Michael Handran-Smith (two silvers), Wolfgang Trenkler, Adrian ‘Wol’ Reich (x2), John van der Zalm, Matthew Kennedy (a 3rd), Neill Gardner, Joel Gaskin, James Edwards, Gary Waters, Stuart Kirk (x2, including a silver) and Paul Reck.

With those wins, SABC won joint best Club at ANHC Clubnight with our ‘snake oil salesmen’ themed bar. Gary’s Saison won third place in the Hopco Southern Cross hop challenge. The prize was a piece of shiny SS Brewtech that we’re going to work out how the club members can use it.

Overall the National champs and ANHC conference was a huge success for us. A big thank you to everyone who won a place, attended the conference and dressed up or brewed for Club Night but especially Gary Waters and his wife Lee who not only dreamt up our theme, they also sourced the props (thanks Pirate), helped all of us find our costumes (thanks Priddo) but also brewed two excellent beers, drove our kegs and props over with Kieren. It all came together so well and topped off by Sam’s great labels.

Finally, to acknowledge that Mike Leupold awarded John Preston Award for his running SABSOSA over the last 20+ years. This is a prize awarded at the Australian National Homebrewing Conference recognising his outstanding contribution to Australian home brewing. Mike was in Melbourne to accept his award even though he didn’t know he was getting it. Congratulations!

Mike Leupold

Last word from the ‘Prez’

We’ve harped on about Winter Comp and AGM for a while now, and this Wednesday 7pm at the Wheaty, it’s finally here.

With great sadness I will admit that this will be my swan song as SABC Club President. As life takes its twists and turns, priorities change and for me this is no different. The coming year will bring some challenges for me personally which will mean my commitment to the Club will become difficult. I have therefore come to the difficult decision to not re-elect for a Club committee position for the coming year.

I joined the Club in its infancy in 2012 and later joining the committee in late 2013. I’ve seen the Club grow from a small group of eager faces, just happy to share a brewing yarn and a beer, to a well-oiled brew Club that is the envy of homebrewing Clubs the nation over. SABC is what it is today due to the commitment and passion of the Club’s committee over the past few years. This will continue. I urge you to consider if a Club committee position is for you and if it is, give it a red hot go!

I have every confidence that the Club will continue to provide value, education and enjoyment to our loyal and growing membership in the year to come, and maybe a yarn and a few beers too!!

As for me, I hope to take a step back and enjoy the progress of this great Club from afar for a change, with a pint of SA’s finest in hand of course.

Cheers and beers, Clint

Off flavours in beer presentations

At our June meeting, the club presented a series of tastings of beers with off flavours added to them using professional sensory kits.

Acetaldehyde, Solvent-like, Diacetyl and DMS (dimethyl sulfide).

To accompany the tastings for discussion there was also some short presentations. You can download the slides as PDF documents below.
