BVB Event – Cutoff Date for RSVP – 12/11/14!

Tomorrow – 12th of November – is the cutoff date to RSVP for the BVB event! This is due to the fact that we need to finalise numbers with BVB for catering requirements.

This event is fantastic value if you’re interested in beer and food pairing; and even if you’re not – it will be a great chance to catch up with other members and enjoy some quality food and beer from Barossa Valley Brewing.

Full information is available at our previous post by clicking here.

Brewer of the Year – The Decider!

Both brewers have brewed their beers and both are currently going through fermentation as this is typed!

Both brewers have provided some notes on their beers below:

Brewer 1: There were a few dough balls. The mash was terminated by heating to 86°C. The kettle losses were high due to the size of the kettle. This meant that top up water was required.
A 90min mash was performed on my beer. The volumes after were down and gravities were up. Its up to you to judge the beer, but the brew day was a success. I was really surprised and happy that my efficiency guestimates worked.

Brewer 2: Everything went to plan. All my numbers were matched (Volume and OG). My mash temps seemed to fluctuated a bit (later in the mash), but never drifted more than 1 degree C away from my target temp. I hit my final volume into the fermentor, so I know my boil went to plan. I pitched the yeast that night and it was bubbling pretty hard by morning, It was a hot few days during the early stages of the fermentation, which worried me at the time. The temps were right where I wanted them during the fermentation, never more than half a degree C away from my target.

The countdown to the BVB event is ON! This will be a cracking final challenge and will decide our winner!

September Members Meeting. This Wednesday!

It’s that time of the month again folks, time for our regular members meeting at The Wheaty. They’re held every 3rd Wednesday from 7pm out in the back room.

This meeting has no set discussion or presentation topic, but we will be running a dollar raffle for 2kg of spec malt – Special Roast, Melonoidin or Dark Crystal (to be decided). 100% of all money received goes directly to the club, as the malt was generously donated by a friend of the club.

This may also be your last chance to get in on the 8 issue BYO subscription for $40! This is a fantastic offer to get behind, the magazine has a good range of articles catering for brewers of every skill and experience level. It is cheaper to get the magazines via this order than to sign up for your own subscription by a good amount, with the extra benefit for your club that a percentage of the cost directly comes back to SABC!

Spots are filling fast – the offer will end at THIS club members meeting so that the details can be sent to BYO a week after the club meeting – you have until that date to get in!

We’ll see you at The Wheaty!

August Members Meeting

Our monthly members meeting is just a few days away now, 20th of August, 7pm @ The Wheatsheaf Hotel in Thebarton.

This months topic will be a group discussion on preparing Yeast Starters; which as any experienced brewer will tell you is a good way to ensure you have the correct quantity of healthy yeast which helps your beer be the best it can be.

We’re also having a raffle at this meeting, so bring your spare gold coins! The prize is a magnetic stir-plate which was generously donated by Carter Brewing. Tickets are $2 each, with 100% of the funds going directly to SABC. Stir plates are a great way to help grow your yeast, so grab a couple of tickets!

BYO Magazine, Discounted subscriptions for club members!

We are now able to offer a discounted subscription to the American homebrewing magazine BYO.

The normal subscription price for Australia, including international shipping, is $45 USD (~$48 AUD + bank fees).

We are able to offer to our financial club members an 8 issue subscription for $40 AUD, including international shipping. This represents an impressive saving over the normal price, with the additional benefit that SABC receives a percentage of this price which goes directly back to support the club!

There is a limited time on this offer, as we need to compile the members who wish to take advantage of this and their payments within 1 month, and there is a minimum of 10 members for this offer (Restriction imposed by BYO, not SABC). Cut off date is September 17th (Club Meeting), any interest after this date will miss out!

To take advantage of this offer, please email the club directly at sabrewclub@gmail.com stating your desire to be included, with your postal address, and transfer $40 AUD to the club bank account, as below:

Account – South Australian Brewing Club Incorporated
Account No. 1073 8025
BSB 065 004

Orders need to be received by September 17th (Club Meeting), as outlined above, to be included in the offer; and we need 10 members minimum (BYO restriction, not SABC). This order will only be completed once per year.

Unfortunately some members, gmail users especially, have not been seeing these email newsletters arrive in their mailbox.

We use a mail distribution service called MailChimp, and apparently some of the email content (likely the HTML tags used, or perhaps other users of the same service) causes these emails to be picked up as spam. They’re not, we’re not selling anything, and all our members requested them.

Membership subs are due!

I’m sure current members will agree we’ve had a fantastic first 18 months as a club. With some excellent events in our past such as tours of Lobethal Bierhaus and Brew Boys breweries, an excellent American style BBQ thanks to valued club member Darren B; and of course our informative monthly club members meetings which take place on the 3rd Wednesday of every month at the craft beer mecca The Wheaty.

That’s only the beginning! We have another fantastic 12 months ahead and we’re looking to share it with all our members.
