May Meeting Update

Due to the Pint of Science sessions running in the back room at The Wheaty, this week’s meeting will be held in the dining room.

We have a few NEIPAs to try, with a presentation and a bit of discussion on this relatively new style.  There will also be a raffle this month, with an unusual but interesting prize, so bring your spare change…

We will kick off somewhere between 7.00 and 7.30 pm.  See you there!

NEIPA brewers needed!

We’re still looking for a couple more brewers to brew a New England IPA for the May meeting.  There’s still time (this style is most definitely a fresh style), so if you can manage to crank one out, please let us know by emailing the club. You don’t need to have brewed the style before, just to be willing to have a crack at something new.  See the original post here for more details.

April Meeting

The April meeting is just around the corner (next week, Wednesday 19th, 7.00pm at the Wheaty).  We will be looking at a comparison brew of four beers brewed with cultured Coopers yeast, presented by Kieren.  May contain traces of hops…

In addition, if any members have beers they wish to present to the meeting, please email us.  You will need to be prepared to talk about your beer, preferably with recipe in hand and any specifics from the brew day.  Please note, that beers with faults are always welcome (probably more than those without), as they help us all to learn to recognise faults and the discussion on how to remedy them is always positive and helpful.

See you next week!

SABC is getting Juicy this May!

With the New England IPA style all the rage at the moment, we wondered if a tasting of the Juicy variety was in order.

We’re calling on 3 members to brew their best NEIPA for this May’s monthly meeting for a comparison and discussion session.

You don’t need to have brewed this style before, and if you haven’t, here’s some useful info on the style:

https://www.homebrewersassociation.org/how-to-brew/tips-brewing-new-england-ipa/

http://aleofatime.com/2016/08/hazy-days-neipa/

Brewers will be asked to be prepared to present on their recipe and processes.

If you’re ready and able to brew for the meeting, please email the club at info@sabrew.com

First come first serve, please register your interest to participate by Friday 21st of April.

A short presentation on the style will also be presented on the night.

February Meeting

It’s Festival and Fringe time again, and so we’ve been displaced from out usual home in the Tin Shed in the name of art.  We will have a crack at holding the meeting in the beer garden this time (weather permitting), as it is a bit less of a thoroughfare than the dining room.

As we ran out of time to judge the other categories on Saturday, we will be judging these beers (only 7) on Wednesday.  If you’re interested in judging, please come forward!

We will also have our glorious former president and now bound-for-fame-and-fortune pro brewer Brad Bown chatting to us about his journey so far.  At some point in the evening, Jade will pop in to announce the winning beer in the Summer Competition, and as always, if you have a beer you would like to present to the group, just drop us an email to let us know.

See you there!

January Meeting – It’s at Little Bang!

The January meeting is this week, and in case you haven’t caught the news, we will be at Little Bang.  They have some shiny new stainless to show us, and no doubt have other topics in mind to bang on about.

As usual we will have time for tastings, so if you have a beer to bring along let us know.  We’re starting at 7.00pm, and the address details are below.  See you there!

December Meeting Reminder

A quick reminder that the December meeting is this week.  Nothing formal is planned, however if you have a beer you would like to share (a Christmas beer even…), email us to let us know and bring along a few longnecks or equivalent.  If there is enough interest, we will do a pizza order ($5.00 per person) at some point.  With a bit of luck the Wheaty will also have a beer from Left Barrel on tap, and you may even get to meet the brewer 😉

See you there!

September Meeting Update

A quick update on next month’s meeting.  We are lucky to have Matt King coming along to talk to us about the craft beer industry and where things are heading over the next little while.  For those that don’t know, Matt is one of the brains behind the Crafty Pint website and blog. As you can imagine, he has his finger pretty well on the pulse.

The September meeting is on Wednesday the 21st, and we start at 7pm, out the back at the Wheaty.

2016 AGM

The AGM is this coming Saturday the 23rd of July, starting at 1pm sharp out the back at the Wheaty.

Attached to this post are the agenda for the AGM, as well as the minutes of the last AGM.

At the AGM, all committee positions will be declared vacant, and any financial member is eligible to nominate for a role on the committee.  There are four club officers: President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary.  There are also up to four general committee members, one of which this year we are specifically targeting as a development officer. This role is essentially to build relationships between the club and potential sponsors and the brewing community generally.  Anyone who wishes to nominate for a position can send an email, or nominate on the day.

Another (final, I promise) reminder that to be eligible to vote at the AGM, you must be a financial member.

We hope to see as many members there as possible, and don’t for get the Winter Competition judging is straight after the AGM.

June meeting

The June meeting is coming up, and it should be another interesting one.  This month’s topic is “All Grain vs Extract”, and we will have two beers to compare and discuss, brewed by Luke and Simon, which were brewed especially for the meeting.  Hopefully we will all learn a bit about recipe conversion, and factors to take into account when doing so.

As always, if you have a beer you would like to present, please email us and bring along three longnecks ore equivalent.  Please be prepared to talk about your beer and have as much info on the recipe and brewday as possible.

See you at the Wheaty on Wednesday the 15th, 7pm out the back.

May meeting

The next meeting is a couple of weeks away, on May 18th.  This month we are conducting a beer faults tasting session, where we will be presenting three “spiked” beers with common faults.  A big thanks to Dr. Smurto for helping out with this.  Hopefully it is a good learning experience for everyone.

If you have a beer that you would like to present, send us an email and bring it along.  Aim for three longnecks or equivalent, and please be prepared to discuss your beer in detail (i.e. have the recipe and any notes from the brew day on hand).  If you would like your beer to be judged against a style, that’s no problem.  We always have judging forms on hand.
