BeerBQ wrap (spoiler, banger!) and notice of AGM

Just a couple of weeks on from the last Beer n BBQ, we had our own peak beer festival for members and their guests — BeerBQ — on Saturday night on the revered ‘EKTG deck’ stage. More below, but first, July’s meeting…

AGM 2025

Members are advised that the Annual General Meeting of the South Australian Brewing Club will be held on 16 July 2025, The Wheatsheaf Hotel at 7pm. The agenda is here, 2024 minutes are here.

Other business and nominations for committee positions should be submitted to the secretary by email by 7pm Tuesday, July 15 or prior to the election at the meeting.

After AGM business, we’ll be back to a normal meeting with tastings and a stout old grain vs. new grain ‘ex-beer-iment”. If you’d like to share a beer, email us to grab the slot.

BeerBQ, 2025

Last Saturday night, we had a perfect night under the stars for the club’s annual BeerBQ. Club members brought about 25 different beers to share. From pils, pales and IPAs to stouts and wee heavies, there wasn’t a bad beer.

Thanks to BJ (Bjorn), assisted by Lachlan, for cooking the full pig on a spit all afternoon, Paul for his brisket and to everyone who chipped in with food or help to make it one of the best events we’ve ever held.

Winners on the night in the ‘bottle cap’ popular choice awards voted by members, guests and ETKG members were: Adam, Darren, Wolf and Lucas. They get points in the Brewer of the Year competition, as does everyone who brought a beer along.

Praise from the tennis club members who join us each year was strong too.

June meeting recap pH meters

Thanks to Leon for presenting at our June meeting. Everyone went away with a better understanding of how pH meters work and how to use them. You can grab his slide deck here.

BeerBQ, SABC’s night of the year, this Saturday

SABC’s annual BeerBQ is this Saturday night. What is it, and how does it work? If you’re an old hand, you’ll know it’s free; everyone brings homebrew, we provide the food, and it’s a great night. It’s free, but you must RSVP by logging in and grabbing a ticket here. (NOTE – you need to select “My Account” and login first. On a mobile phone “it’s”My Account” is under “Menu”)

If you’ve been around the club for a while, you probably know what BeerBQ is. But if you’re newer or haven’t made it along yet, here’s the short version: it’s our yearly SABC get-together where we fire up the spit for some delicious BBQ, many bring a keg of homebrew to share, and enjoy an evening of good company, food, and homebrew.

It’s not a competition or a judging event. There’s no pressure. Just bring a bottle or two if that’s all you have of something you’ve brewed (if you’ve got some), try what others have made, and have a chat. Everyone’s welcome—whether you’ve been brewing for years or you’ve just started thinking about your first batch.

If you’re not sure what to bring, bring yourself—we’ll have plenty going around. Buy a ticket for a non-member for $30 at the club shop.

It’s at the East Torrens Kensington Gardens Tennis Club, East Terrace & South Terrace, Kensington Gardens from 6pm. See you there!

PH Meters, Tasting slots and BeerBQ

June Meeting – PH Meters

The June meeting is this Wednesday and we’re back at The Wheaty to talk about pH Meters. Leon, our resident expert on the subject, will dive into the hows, whys and whens of measuring pH during brewing.

We’ll also be offering pH meter calibrations, so bring your meter along and see how it compares to everyone else.

Meeting Tasting Slots

We have 3 tasting slots available this month. If you’ve brewed a great beer you want to show off, or an average beer you want constructive feedback on, bring it along to share, and you can earn BOTY points to add to your tally! Please email us or contact a committee member directly to let them know you would like a slot as they are limited.

BeerBQ, BeerBQ, BeerBQ

There’s less than 2 weeks to go until BeerBQ (Saturday, June 28th, 6PM). You know the drill. Lots of amazing homebrewed beers, lots of delicious BBQ, lots of prizes and BOTY points on offer. Head to the SABC shop to register your free member ticket, purchase a ticket for your friends and/or family and get ready for a fantastic night.

BeerBQ in 3 weeks!

It’s that time of year folks, SABC’s biggest annual event the BeerBQ is now less then 3 weeks away – Saturday 28th June.

This year we’re going all out with a pig on a spit! It will be paired with the crowd favourite slow cooked brisket along with wings, gourmet sausages and all the usual sides and trimmings. An absolute feast!

Then theres the beer. As always members are encouraged to bring along some of their finest to share. We reguarly see the full spectrum from noble German pilsners, to big American stouts to whatever outrageous concoction Kieren has put together.

As part the new Brewer of the Year format, members will receive BOTY points simply for bringing beer to share, with even more points up for grabs in the brewers choice and peoples choice awards. Refer to the BOTY page for more details.

>> Get your tickets now <<

It’s free for members but you must order your ticket so we have numbers. Guest tickets are $30.

Join the event on Facebook to stay up-to-date and give us a sneak preview on what you’ll bring along.

Dark and roasty, warm and toasty. Hello winter

Dark and roasty, warm and toasty. Hello winter. A quick sprint around what’s going on.

Last month’s meeting at Crafty Robot was great. Nice to go somewhere new and support them. Thanks, Jules, for the presentation on his frankenchiller/heater, too. If you’ve got a suggestion for a meeting venue, or a topic you’d like to present on, let us know.

SABC represent at Beer & BBQ

First, we’re doing a casual catch-up at Beer & BBQ this Saturday. If you’re going along, wear some club kit and watch out for members.

A suggested meet-up spot might get suggested on Facebook on Friday, so keep an eye out, or suggest one.

If you don’t have a ticket, jump onto it now. Tickets are selling out, probably because it’s the last time (so said Johnny Farnham… we’ll see).

If you’re going on Sunday or other times, share your plans in the group so you can find a wing-person.

Hang with members this weekend at Beer & BBQ

SABC’s BeerBBQ

Not to be confused with Beer & BBQ, our annual event that is more than 10 years old and will keep going. It is on Saturday, June 28. It’s a simple concept — everyone brings beer, everyone shares beer, and the club puts on an amazing smorgasbord of food.

Tickets for members are FREE (so renew your membership now), and for guests, it’s $30. They’ll be in the shop tonight. Please get a ticket so we know how many to cater for. There’s a whole spit this year.

It means brew this weekend (for BeerBQ and July’s winter comp!

June meeting — all about pH and water

Pic: Nick McAuley knows his numbers

Our resident water biologist and water quality expert will be hosting an explainer pH meters, how to use them, test them and why pH matters. Bring your pH meters for testing.

Award-winning homebrewers say it’s one of the most important changes they made to their brewing to take their beer to the next level.
