Brewer of the Year

The SABC Brewer of the Year competition runs throughout the calendar year and awards points to members for participating in club events and competitions. The top point scorer at the end of the year is named SABC Brewer of the Year and has their name added to the SABC Brewer Of The Year trophy which they hold on to for the following 12 months.

BOTY Points

Points are awarded for competition entries and beers contibuted to monthly meetings and the annual BeerBQ event.

Club Competitions Points

Club competitions includes the annual Summer and Winter competitions. 10 BOTY points are awarded for each paid entry. The top 6 place getters in a category will receive points if their beer has an average judged score of at least 30. Additional points are awarded for entries with average judge scores of 35+.

ABCSA

Points will be awarded to the top 3 place getters in each category of ABCSA.

Monthly Meetings

Points will be awarded to members who present a beer for tasting at a monthly meeting. Points will also be awarded when a member brews a beer to be tasted as part of a meeting topic.

BOTY Competition Rules

Club competitions

  1. In order to receive BOTY points for entering a club competition, entries must be added to the portal, paid and received by the stewards prior to the start of judging.
  2. Points awarded based on a beers score will use the average score out of 50. The average score will be calculated by adding all judges scores together and dividing by the number of judges.
  3. Points will only be awarded for 1st to 6th place if the average judge score is 30+
  4. The average judge score will always round down. Eg 29.9 will become 29.

ABCSA/Non Club competitions

  1. Points will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each category of ABCSA
  2. Points will only be awarded for additional non-club competitions if agreed to by the SABC committee and published to the SABC website at least 2 weeks prior to competition entry closure
  3. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be determined by the competitions official published results

BeerBQ

  1. Brewers who bring at least 4L of a beer they have brewed to share at the annual BeerBQ will be elligable for 20 points.
  2. A maximum of 20 points will be awarded per brewer per year. IE members who bring 2 beers will not receive 40 points
  3. To be awarded the points the brewer must participate in the Brewers/Peoples Choice competition.

Meetings

  1. Members who present a beer they have brewed will receive 30 points
  2. Members who brew a beer for a meeting topic will receive 20 points
  3. Members may only receive points for presenting a beer once per calendar year
  4. Members must present their beer to all attendees and take questions
  5. Members must request permission to present their beer and be accepted by the commitee
  6. Members may be unable to present their beer if there are already beers being presented as part of a meeting topic, or due to venue restrictions.

Other

  1. In the event of a dispute over the awarding of BOTY points, the committees decision will be final
  2. The committee reserves to right to deduct/not award points if they believe a members actions to receive BOTY points is outside the spirit of the competition.
