The committee will be meeting this Thursday November 3rd, at 7pm at the King’s Head. Any member is welcome to attend committee meetings, however please shoot us an email if you intend coming along so we can make time in the agenda.

Since its inception in 2012, the South Australian Brewing Club (SABC) has swiftly grown to become the largest and most successful brewing club in Adelaide and the country. The club embodies a diverse membership of individuals with a broad range of brewing expertise, all coming together to share knowledge and enhance their homebrewing skills. Central to the club’s calenda is the popular monthly meeting on the third Wednesday of each month, regularly attended by over 30 participants, thanks to the generous support of The Wheatsheaf Hotel. In addition to these gatherings, the club also hosts special events and brewery visits in Adelaide and the surrounding region. Find out more on our About SABC page.

Ok, we’re back on track for our Pirate Life event, finally. The roadworks have finished on that part of South Road, allowing free access for emergency services for those who have had too much pizza and beer!
The date is Sunday November 27th, starting at 12.30pm.
We will kick off with a brewery tour (and a pint), with lunch starting from 1.30pm. There will be wood oven pizzas (vegetarian available), bruschetta and garlic bread served until 3.30pm. We will have a raffle, and there will be a prize for the best pirate themed accessory or clothing. We will also be announcing the Brewer of the Year.
Cost for non-members is $20.00 per person.
For catering numbers, please let us know if you are coming along, either by indicating so on the facebook event or the old fashioned way by emailing events@sabrew.com.
Munich Helles will be the focus of the upcoming Summer Comp early next year, to be judged on February 11th.
This technical and tricky beauty makes the perfect Summer beer! But can you brew it to be worthy of the tap lineup at the Wheaty?
The brief is as per BJCP style guidelines, but taken with a grain of salt. Overall balance and impression are the key here rather than slavishly adhering to ‘correct’ ingredients/methods. Have a bit of fun with it, but it should still be identifiably Helles eg. not so hoppy it’s effectively a Pils.
Style reference: https://www.weihenstephaner.de/en/our-beers/original-helles/
As well as the main prize of the winning beer being released by Wheaty Brewing Corps in a limited release batch, we have also upped the ante with our ‘Reinheitsgebot’ bumper prize pack containing, wait for it…, hops, malted grain and yeast, courtesy of our sponsorship partners BeerCo and Gladfield Malt. (You can organise your own water)
To be eligible for the main prize, you will need to brew a Munich Helles. We are also running an “other” category, and the styles for this are any from BJCP 2015 guidelines in categories 4, 5, 6 and 7 (keeping the German theme, more or less)
Go forth and brew!
Well, ANHC has been and gone, and what a packed few days that was! A few of us did the whole enchilada, and I think we all agree that it was well worth it. Tiring though. All that beer…
The cherry on the cake was Club Night, and what a night. After a mad scramble to get the Boat Bar assembled, plumbed, lines cleaned and beer flowing, we took out the gong for best represented club! Thanks to all that put in time and effort to bring the Boat from the dreams of a middle aged car salesman to the reality of an eight-tap plus outboard hand pump beer behemoth. We ended up with something like 13 kegs on the night, and I think everyone who contributed got a beer on tap. Here are a few photos from the night, for those that don’t do Facebook.
The dread pirate BJ with the great Stan Hieronymus
With a couple of weekends’ work from a few of our members, we have a pretty nifty bar, in the shape of a small dinghy, ready to go for Club Night. What we are missing is a bit of set dressing to take our Pirates with Paddles theme to the next level.
If you have any marine paraphernalia that you are willing to lend the club for an evening, please get in touch with Gary on 0417 893 321. We’re thinking tea chests, anchors, buoys, nets or anything that you think would fit the theme.
And don’t be afraid to get out that old pirate costume you’ve got stashed in the back of the wardrobe. Stuffed parrots not mandatory but preferred. Think of it as a practise run for the Pirate Life event later in the year.
See you there, me hearties!
We think we may still need a few more brewers for ANHC Club Night, but it’s really hard to tell IF WE DON’T KNOW WHO IS BREWING!
PLEASE, if you are brewing or can brew for Club Night, can you take one minute (that’s all it will take) to fill out the on-line form here. The information that you provide will make planning easier for those people trying to pull this event together.
Thanks
SABSOSA result have been posted (in record time – good work guys). Congratulations to all place-getters, and particularly to SABC members, who are well represented.
Check the full results here. Note that the BOTY leaderboard has been taken down until the announcement and presentation.
We currently have no tastings lined up for the next meeting. If you have a beer you would like some constructive feedback on, or even if you just want to show off, send us an email and bring it along.
You will need three longnecks or equivalent, and your recipe and brew day notes.
As you are aware, we need brewers to brew for Club Night. In an effort to keep it all in one place, we have created a web form for brewers to submit their info. Even if you have told a committee member that you are brewing, please take a minute to fill out the form so we know what we are getting and from whom. We still need more brewers, so if you think you have some spare bandwidth in your brewing schedules, please help out.
The form is here.
ANHC 5 in Adelaide is looming ever closer, and the conference team are seeking some enthusiastic volunteers who are keen to lend a hand during the event. If you’d like to be a part of the team and assist with things like processing registrations, moving kegs, pouring/serving beers and whatever other important tasks are required to make the event a success, please email Lachlan via clubnight@anhc.com.au
These aren’t requirements, but it would help us to know:
Congratulations and welcome to our newest member, Travis Campbell. What Travis’s wife didn’t know when she signed him up for Father’s Day, was that his membership means we can now boast that every place in all categories for the Gawler Show was taken out by an SABC member. Nice work people!
The BOTY leader board has now been updated, you can check it out here.
Here are the results for this year’s Gawler Show (as yet unpublished by the organisers, so E&OE). A good representation by our members, and congratulations to all that took part. The BOTY leaderboard should be updated in the next few days.
